It is hard for Christians, whether they are adults or children, to remember that it is not the gifts under the tree that make Christmas so important. If the presents were the only things we looked forward to, then when the presents were opened, Christmas would be over for us.
But Christmastime is not just one day. It is a season of almost three weeks after December 25. We have many days to celebrate Jesus Christ’s life during that time. On January 1 we celebrate the solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. The feast of the Epiphany is January 6, and the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated on Sunday, January 13.
Many of these days are spent at home during our school break. But when we come back, there is still a week of Christmastime left to celebrate at school with our friends. We can talk to our friends about our family traditions, which we celebrated, events on our vacation and, of course, the presents which we received. During Advent we celebrated with prayer the preparation of the birth of Christ, and we now can continue the joyful celebrations throughout the month of January. Did you remember to keep Christ in Christmas?
The word epiphany means “showing.” We rejoice that the glory is shown through Jesus, our Savior. That glory is shown to the Magi who came from far away and followed the star to Bethlehem. The wise men are the first of many people who would seek Jesus and find him.
January is the first month of the New Year. It is hard to believe it is 2019. The word January comes from the Latin word janua. It means “doorway.” It is an old custom to bless doorways at Epiphany, and this custom is part of the blessing of our classrooms. January is the year’s doorway, an entrance into a bright new beginning!
As we talk about new beginnings, this is a great time to make a New Year’s Resolution; for yourself or your family. Work with your children in setting a resolution for 2019. This is a great way to begin the New Year.
