February Newsletter

Dear Parents,

This month is a month of celebrations. We are in the middle of celebrating Catholic Schools Week
2018. This year’s message is ‘Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed!’ This theme
encompasses the core products and values that can be found at St. Amelia School. Not only are we
teaching students to become future servant leaders, faith-filled disciples, and enriched citizens in our
communities, educators are growing with them.

At St. Amelia School, we are all learners, servants, and leaders. These shared qualities are what
make St. Amelia School work! They are what makes our school and its members succeed. This year’s
theme also focuses on key elements of Catholic education: faith development, academic excellence, and
dedication to service. These elements set us apart and are the primary reason why families make sacrifices
to provide their children with a Catholic education.

In mid-February we are having a trifecta: On February 13, 2018 we are celebrating the 100th Day
of School, Valentine’s Day, and Mardi Gras! This year Lent begins on February 14, 2018.
We have all heard of TEAM – Together Everyone Achieves More. For Lent we are using that same
term but have changed it to … “Together we fast. Every day we pray. Always we give. Make a
difference.” That is what Lent is all about – we fast, we pray, we give – we make a difference. In Lent we
are called to practice the three traditional acts:

  • Prayer – for the Good of the Soul
  • Fasting – for the Good of the Body
  • Almsgiving/Charity – for the Good of Others

Lent is the time of year when Christian people begin their forty day journey toward Easter. During
this time we reflect on our lives and repent for the ways in which we failed to fully live out the call of our
Baptism. The word “lent” means springtime. It comes from the same root as “lengthen”, since the days
begin to lengthen during the time which we celebrate lent.

PRAYER – We gather as a school community weekly, prayer is our focus throughout our day.

As we move from Ordinary Time to Lent in the Church calendar, we have so much to be thankful for.
We give thanks to God for all he has given us here at St. Amelia School. I am thankful for our parent
volunteers and the many gifts they share with us. We have been having a great response to our fund
raisers this year. Your participation in our school projects does not go unnoticed.

From all of us here at St. Amelia School community – Thank You!

James Mulé
